“To be beautiful means to be yourself. You don’t need to be accepted by others. You need to accept yourself.”
In the past year, I have helped many individuals to change their relationship with food. One topic that comes up time and time again, as I talk to individuals about their worries and concerns, is confidence and self-esteem. From my experience, many intelligent, talented and beautiful people have very-low self esteem. In fact, I would go as far as saying, in this air-brushed, social-media-crazy world that we now find ourselves in, that there is an epidemic of low-confidence. Nobody seems to believe in themselves and worse - everybody seems to wish they were more like someone else.
Now this low confidence often leads to a dysfunctional relationship with food (or alcohol/drugs etc) as an individual can turn to food (or alcohol/or shopping/ or drugs) to cope with negative emotions that they are feeling. Similarly, feelings of inadequacy can lead an individual to starve themselves and restrict their food intake. Whichever is the case, underlying many unhealthy relationships with food, is a lack of self-esteem and confidence.
Yet when I ask many of the wonderful men and women that I work with what they find attractive in others - one answer consistently comes up - they find CONFIDENCE attractive. The thing that these people find most attractive in others is not a certain body shape; not a certain eye or hair colour - in fact it is not something physical at all. It is that wonderful and positive energy that you get from someone that is just happy to be who they are - and that is unapologetically themselves (flaws and all). Someone that is comfortable in their own skin, someone that holds their head up high and believes in themselves, someone with a warm, positive energy (irrespective of their body shape/size/wrinkles etc) - that person, is the most attractive person to them.
Confidence is attractive. Confidence - not the loud/in-your-face/boast-to-everybody type of confidence but the quiet/internal/self-belief kind of confidence - is wonderfully powerful. It can allow you to see the good not just in yourself but in others and the world around you. It can allow you to focus on your hopes and your dreams, instead of your flaws and insecurities. It can take you out of your head and into the bigger picture. So I make sure to help every single one of my clients to feel more confident - to feel comfortable in their skin - to embrace fully who they are!
